Philips Norelco QT4050 Beard Trimmer Review

The Philips Norelco QT4050 beard trimmer is equipped with a special built-in vacuum system that sucks in hair as it clips, preventing loose hair from falling in the sink. The trimmer itself provides a very good cut and allows variable length settings to provide an even shave. It comes with a lithium ion battery which can provide hours of shaving time with a quick charge. It comes complete with a 110v-240v charging adaptor and can function with or without its cord. This trimmer is also one of the most affordable in its category.

The good

First of all, let us say that the Philips Norelco QT4050 beard trimmer is one of the most impressive units we’ve came across in its price range. For a start, this device is completely maintenance free; the blades stay sharp forever, and the added vacuum that sucks hairs in while you trim is an excellent addition. The sink will see very few hairs, and this trimmer provides the cleanest shaving experience out of any other unit in its category. The precision zoom hair length selector is very well designed. It was created in such a way that it is merely impossible for the hair length to change while you’re shaving. The lithium ion battery is a huge plus, and the Philips Norelco QT4050 is one of the only beard trimmers on the market to have a lithium battery. This significantly reduces charging times and this trimmer can hold its charge for much longer than the majority of trimmers that use nickel batteries. The battery is so powerful in fact that you could literally go on a trip and handle all of your shaving on a single charge. However, if you are traveling abroad for a long period, the international voltage charger is a big plus (it accepts both 110v and 240v inputs). The number of different length settings is also a big advantage. With over 18 settings to choose from, you can really adjust the trimmer to the exact hair length that you want.

The bad

The worst thing about the Philips Norelco is actually one of its best features, the vacuum, which could have been a little more powerful. While it does suck up the majority of stray hairs, the next model in line is actually equipped with a turbo boost vacuum which solves this problem. However, it is also much more expensive, so you would be wise to stick with the QT4050 if you don’t care about the vacuum too much. The other negative aspect about the vacuum is where the sucked hairs are stored. To access the hair and empty the compartment, a small door needs to be opened which can be pretty annoying. Furthermore, the compartment contains several crevasses where hair can get caught and getting them out can be a real chore. The brush that comes with the set is useful in this aspect, but the whole design could have been made better. Perhaps a container which one could remove from the trimmer and empty separately would’ve been a better idea. However, the vacuum system is still a great feature on this trimmer and prevents your sink from getting clogged with loose hair. Aside from this fact, there is little bad we can say about this unit.

Our verdict

The Philips Norelco QT4050 Beard Trimmer is a great piece of equipment and its unique set of features makes it one of the most interesting models in its category. While the vacuum’s container could have been designed a little better, it is still just a minor detail. The maintenance free, self lubricating blades mean that you’ll never have to worry about switching your blades again and the cut this trimmer provides is very precise and consistent. With excellent battery durability and quick recharging time, along with the ability to operate on two voltages, the Philips Norelco QT4050 beard trimmer is an ideal trimmer for anyone who travels regularly. But even for the everyday man, it is still an excellent trimmer, which provides a great set of features at a reasonable price. All in all, the Philips Norelco QT4050 Beard Trimmer is one of the best you can find in its category.
